As we continue to celebrate the success of women in all fields, let’s not forget to celebrate women in the media and the brilliant minds behind some of the greatest shows and movies for, about, and by women. Here’s a list of 10 series and movies made by women and starring women to add to your binge list.

    This web series glowed up into a television sitcom, all thanks to its stars and creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. The sitcom portrays Glazer and Jacobson’s real-life friendship, as well as their adventures as they try to make it in New York City.

    Talk about taking a well-known trope and turning it on its head. Aline Brosh McKenna and Rachel Bloom cowrite this comedy musical about New York lawyer Rebecca Bunch, played by Bloom. After a chance encounter with her summer camp boyfriend, she moves across the country to West Covina, California. In her search for true happiness, she instead finds romantic heartbreak, female friendships, a psychiatric diagnosis, and self-love.

    Imagine Sex and the City, but for millennials, and you’ve got The Bold Type. This comedy drama series by Sarah Watson is inspired by the life and career of Joanna Coles, the editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine. The series follows three women on three different paths: Jane Sloan, who is pursuing a writing career; Kat Edison, a social media director turned activist and political candidate; and Sutton Brady, an assistant looking to become a fashion stylist. The show dives into deep issues such as the glass ceiling, sexuality, miscarriage, and breast cancer awareness.

    Written by and starring Tina Fey, this show is a hilarious look behind the scenes of a sketch comedy show. The show is based on Fey’s experiences as head writer on the hit sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). The show parodies not only the behind the scenes of SNL but also the corporate structure of NBC, the network on which both SNL and 30 Rock’s fictional show is produced.

    Very few shows explore women’s sexuality without actually sexualizing women. Chewing Gum, starring and written by Michaela Coel, is just one of the few. In the show, Coel plays Tracey, a Londoner who gets into awkward and hilarious high jinks as she makes her sexual fantasies come to life.

    Based on a 2015 novel by Jennifer Mathieu, Moxie is a comedy-drama starring Hadley Robinson as Vivian. Things change for the shy sixteen-year-old when she finds her mother’s old zines from her own teenage years. Motivated by these as well as several incidents in her school, Vivian starts her own zine called Moxie, which she distributes anonymously in the girls’ bathroom. The movie was directed by Amy Poehler, who plays Vivian’s mother, Lucy.

    This Netflix young adult comedy series is the story of Devi Vishwakumar, a first-generation Indian American teenager. The series shows her deal with problems experienced by every American teenager, made more complex by being stuck between cultures. On top of that, she is dealing with processing the death of her father. The show shines a light on young love, family, grief, and mental health. The series was cocreated by Mindy Kaling and was partly based on her own life.

    Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and stars in this fourth-wall-breaking comedy about a single woman searching for meaning in her monotonous life. Fleabag constantly addresses her audience directly. At first, it’s a funny trick, but soon it morphs into something else.

    A landmark show at the time it aired, Orange Is the New Black takes place inside a women’s correctional facility. The show was based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, detailing the time she spent in a minimum-security federal prison. The show was lauded for the diversity of its cast and the relationships it portrayed. Aside from delving into issues related to the prison system, the show also sheds light on various women’s issues, including bodily autonomy and sexual assault. The series was made by Jenji Kohan, also known for creating the TV show Weeds.

    This romantic comedy written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson stars Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez as Jenny. The plot is told in multiple timelines but takes place after Jenny is dumped by her boyfriend of nine years right before she leaves New York to pursue her dream job in San Francisco. The film takes its audiences through Jenny’s process as she grieves both her finished relationship and leaving New York and focuses on her relationship with her two best friends Erin and Blair.
