  13. The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

In this book, Alexander argues that the incarceration system was designed to marginalize black Americans, especially black men. She does this by comparing the system to the 19th–20th century Jim Crow laws, which intended to marginalize black Americans who were trying to establish businesses, join careers, or run for office during the Reconstruction period. She also references the Reagan administration’s war on drugs, which removed the rights of black Americans who served time for nonviolent crimes.
