17th on '17: The Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition

Posted on Apr 03, 2017

The University of Chicago Press announced last March 28 that a seventeenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style is currently in the works and will be ready for release this year.

The Chicago Manual of Style—the undisputed authority for style, usage, and grammar, now in its 17th edition! at http://www.press.uchicago.edu/sites/cmos17/index.html

In a post on the blog Shop Talk (cmosshoptalk.com), the press detailed some of the changes that will be made in the updated stylebook. The hyphen in the word e-mail will be removed, and the word Internet will be lowercased. More updates to the manual are the use of the singular they in place of the generic he/she and the acceptance of the singular they as a preferred personal pronoun. Thirty new sections on syntax will also be added to the manual’s grammar and usage chapter.

The website will be updated with further details to help users of the current manual transition to the new edition. The press is currently in the process of proofing and finalizing the seventeenth edition.

Prior to making the announcement online, the new edition was announced in the London Book Fair, the American Copy Editors Society meeting, and the Association of College and Research Libraries conference.

Preorder of the hardcover edition is now available at the University of Chicago Press official website. Those who are currently subscribed to the online version of the manual will also receive the new online edition this coming September. However, the website will cease support of the manual’s 15th edition.
