Early in life, Thomas was exposed to activism as well as social issues in her hometown. She was only six when she witnessed her first shoot-out. Thomas recounted in an interview with The Guardian that, the day after it happened, she was brought to a library by her mother to show her that the world was more than what she witnessed that day. This event was what inspired her to become a writer.

In her teens, Thomas had a short-lived rap career, even being the subject of an article in Right On! Magazine. She then went on to study at Belhaven University and subsequently received her BFA in Creative Writing from the same university.

After college, Thomas intended on pursuing a career writing fantasy and middle-grade novels. However, she went on a different route, motivated by her experiences as a child, which reflected the more recent news on police brutality.

Thomas’s debut novel, The Hate U Give, is about Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old black girl from a poor neighborhood who attends a mostly white private school in the affluent part of the city. One unfortunate night, Starr witnesses her childhood friend Khalil be shot and killed by a police officer and becomes part of the legal and media circus surrounding the story. The novel brings to light the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as the effects of police brutality on individuals as well as communities.

According to Thomas, the novel’s title, The Hate U Give, was inspired by rapper Tupac Shakur’s THUG LIFE tattoo, which is allegedly an acronym of The Hate U Give Little Infants F*** Everybody. In 2018, the novel was adapted into a movie starring Amandla Stenberg. Aside from being a New York Times best seller, the novel won several awards, including the William C. Morris Award, the Michael L. Printz Award, and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.

In 2019, Thomas published her second book. On the Come Up tells the story of Bri, a sixteen-year-old rapper hoping to follow her father’s footsteps in the industry. After posting one of her raps, Bri becomes an overnight viral sensation, and her composition sparks controversy. The novel deals with the consequences experienced by women and minorities when they do speak up, as well as the pros and cons of “going viral.”

Thomas published her third novel, Concrete Rose, in 2020. The novel is a prequel to The Hate U Give, this time focusing on Starr’s father, Maverick Carter, when he was seventeen years old. To help his mom keep their family afloat while his dad is in jail, Maverick deals for a gang. Things change when he finds out that he is a father. Now with a baby depending on him, he takes an offer to a straight path. However, leaving is not going to be easy.

Aside from being a novelist, Thomas is both an outspoken activist and role model. She was the inaugural recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Grant in 2015, awarded by the We Need Diverse Books campaign. The campaign was launched after a study found that only 93 of 3,200 children’s books published in the United States in 2013 featured black people as the main character. Since the campaign, more and more books written by authors of color and featuring diverse main characters have made the New York Times Best Seller list for young adults.
