Blogging 101: Staging Done Right—Picking a Blog Platform

Posted on Feb 05, 2019

Blogs have developed from online diaries into digital resumes and marketing tools. With the boom that blogging has experienced in the 2000s, many developers have jumped onto the blog bandwagon, creating user-friendly platforms that will help even the least computer-literate person create and manage their own blog.

Blog

Below are five of the most popular and most user-friendly blogging websites. If you already have a blog goal in mind, read on to find out which platform your blog will shine the most.

  1. Blogger

This platform has been around since 1999, so that tells you it has withstood the test of time. Blogger made it to the forefront of the internet when it was purchased by Google in 2003. Subscribers to Google’s services need only sign up with their Google ID and within a few clicks, the blog is alive! For those who like to tinker with website layouts, Blogger has plenty of themes to choose from, plus customizable HTML. Moreover, you can create multiple blogs with just one Google ID.

  2. Tumblr

    Tumblr Logo

Launched in 2007, Tumblr is a blogging platform–slash–social media website that has become notorious for catering to unconventional bloggers. In around 2010, Tumblr evolved into a haven for fandoms, memes, and pop culture in general. Its “Reblog” and “Dashboard” features allow easy content sharing and user interaction, making Tumblr a community within itself. Tumblr supports millions of blogs that share the most mundane to the most serious content. Like Blogger, Tumblr users are allowed multiple blogs under just one email address. It also allows blogs to have multiple administrators.

  3. Squarespace

    Squarespace Logo

Squarespace is a service provider that is a website builder, blogging platform, domain name registrar, and hosting service all in one. The website mostly supports businesses, professionals, and artists who are looking to create websites of their own but may not know where to begin. It is easily customizable but may require a bit more knowledge in webhosting.

  4. Medium

    Medium Logo

The newcomer of the pack, Medium, is not strictly a blogging platform but a “social media” app for writers. Users get to post whatever they want, from literary pieces to op-eds. Each article has an estimated reading time indicated after the preview, so readers know what to expect in terms of length. Other than comments, users can respond to these articles with their own piece. With Medium, content is the priority. One downside is that the profile landing page is not customizable visually.

  5. WordPress

    WordPress Logo

WordPress is both a blogging platform and a web and domain host. Many great independent blogs started out on WordPress and may still be supported by the site. WordPress may look intimidating at first but is easy once you get used to it. The site also offers an in-depth look at your blog statistics. WordPress is a platform that requires no level of blogging expertise.

Keep in mind that these are only five online platforms. There’s plenty more to choose from! Other platforms may allow you more customization, while some will offer support if you aren’t too well-versed with computer languages. Other than accessibility, it’s also important to choose a platform that will effectively highlight the type of content you choose to post, whether they’re photos, videos, or words. With enough research, some trial and error, and a bit of courage, you’ll have your own blog running in no time.
