Blogging 101: Trolls Gonna Troll—How to Deal with Online Hate

Posted on Apr 09, 2019

Have you encountered Internet trolls or hate posts/comments while blogging? We’re here to give you some tips on how to keep it classy while addressing this common but pesky issue.

Difference

Nowadays, people, especially bloggers, have a tendency to expect hateful or discouraging comments as soon as they post something new online. Think of it as a self-precaution or a shock absorber. Internet trolls are fond of using insults or discrediting techniques to put these people down or devalue their contributions—blog posts, artworks, even opinions. Some bloggers and content creators power over these hateful comments and go about their merry way. Sadly, however, others take a huge step back and even discontinue their online work or hobbies.

If you encounter a troll, here’s what you can do:

  1. Ignore them.

What gives these haters the upper hand is attention. As much as possible, don’t give them that satisfaction. Keep your focus on the task at hand. If these trolls are the persistent kind, mute them.

  2. Respond not with passion but with facts.

Trolls are compelled to latch on to people’s content because of entitlement or boredom. They consider themselves smarter than their victims and are eager to elicit equally hate-filled responses to fuel the fires they’ve created. Before you go off the rails and type a hasty and angry reply, take a moment to compose yourself, do a research (this especially goes for business blogs), and maintain a calm tone in responding to the trolls. Lighthearted and even humorous replies can catch these trolls off guard.

  3. Report abusive trolls.

If you get so unlucky as to encounter persistent trolls who like to harass you and spam your blog or your feed with hate, don’t hesitate to report them. Most blogging sites are very strict with anti-harassment rules, so take advantage of the situation and let the authorities do the work.

  4. Keep the receipts.

As soon as you receive a hate comment, don’t immediately delete it. You can take a screenshot of the comment for later reference, especially if the comment contains abuse as well as slander. This will be helpful in the long run.

  5. Ask for help.

In the event you are feeling discouraged or beaten down by the trolls, talk to someone, especially a friend or a loved one, about your problem. Hold nothing back. Mulling over the hate you’ve received without telling anyone means the trolls are still winning. Your friends will remind you of what got you started with your blog in the first place and encourage you to stay on track and keep doing what you like to do. You can also find support groups online, share your experiences, and even learn from others’ experiences with trolls. There is always strength in numbers!

In the end, it’s all about keeping your mind on what you blog and not about what others think of your blog. With time and experience, you’ll eventually learn how to filter out responses to your posts. Embrace positive feedback, take constructive criticisms into consideration, and shoot down those nasty trolls as soon as you see them. Remember these tips while you blog, and you’ll go a long way!
