If you woke up to the smell of barbecue and apple pie, then it's probably the Fourth of July!
On this day in 1776, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, emancipating the thirteen American colonies from British rule. It wasn't an easy road getting here.
Conflict started brewing between America and the British Empire of King George III as early as 1175. It wasn't until June 11, 1776, that the first move toward American Independence was made: a resolution presented by Richard Henry Lee, saying that the colonies should be free from the rule of the British Crown. This inspired the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. The Continental Congress reconvened twice until finally, on July 4, the declaration was adopted by majority of the thirteen colonies—America was free.
From there, America flourished into the proud nation that it is today. The Fourth of July is one of the biggest holidays in the United States, with celebrations starting as early as the weekend before. It's celebrated with daylong block parties and excellent fireworks displays. It's a day when we celebrate all the reasons we're proud to be American!
Happy Fourth of July from all of us here at 1-Hour Proofreading!
