It’s March 8, which means it’s International Women’s Day.

Happy International Women’s Day!

In 1975, the United Nations declared March 8 as International Women’s Day. Celebrations have ranged from parades to lectures, all celebrating the achievements and simply the existence of women across the globe.

The Unites States celebrated their first National Women’s Day a couple of years earlier in 1909, commemorating the 1908 garment workers’ strike. However, the movement for women’s rights started much earlier in 1848. Two women started a protest in New York after another woman was not allowed to speak at an antislavery convention.

After the United States was Europe. Denmark’s The Socialist International declared a celebration of Women’s Day, which was meant to be international, to honor the women’s rights movement. The Netherlands also held a large gathering of 1,300 women from over 12 countries to protest World War 1 in 1915.

The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Europe and North America. The date was chosen to commemorate the Commune de Paris, where women demanded the right to work and the end of job discrimination.

International Women’s Day also became a vital part of the peace movement in Russia. Their first observation of International Women’s Day occurred on the last Sunday of February in 1913. In 1917, Russian women held another strike for “bread and peace” and gained the right to vote. By this time, Russia still hadn’t adopted the Gregorian calendar. After doing so in 1917, the date of their Women’s Day fell on March 8, making it the best date to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The celebration of March 8 as International Women’s Day spread after World War II. The date became official in 1977, International Women’s Year, when the UN declared March 8 International Women’s Day in perpetuity. This declaration furthered women’s movements in member states of the UN and have allowed to further the cause of women’s rights.

Every year, International Women’s Day has a theme. This year’s theme, according to the UN Women website, is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.” According to the official International Women’s Day website, the theme is “#ChoosetoChallenge.”
