How Women’s Month Began

Posted on Mar 01, 2021

This March, we are celebrating International Women’s Day as well as Women’s History Month. Since 1975, the United Nations has designated March 8 as a day to celebrate the historical, economic, political, and social achievements of women around the world. But it wasn’t always like that.

Women's Month

International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in 1911 as a result of protests from multiple women’s groups in Europe and the United States. These groups called for the right to vote, get an education, go to work, and hold public office, among other things. A few years later, women’s groups in Europe, especially Russia, were key in protesting against World War I.

By 1975, the year designated by the United Nations as International Women’s Year, they also designated March 8 as International Women’s Day moving forward.

In the United States, March is celebrated more specifically as Women’s History Month. This celebration evolved in 1995 from Women’s History Week, which was proclaimed in 1981. Women’s History Month celebrates the achievements and contributions made by women to various fields.

Until the seventies, women’s history was not a part of general public consciousness, let alone the educational system. The Educational Task Force of Sonoma County, California, sought to rectify this by starting Women’s History Week in 1978, which included March 8. Activities for the celebrations included presentations, parades, and an essay contest. By 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared Women’s History Week a national celebration. It was declared to be in perpetuity by 1987, with the addition of a presidential proclamation which honored extraordinary American women. By 1995, they expanded the celebrations to an entire month.

Each celebration of Women’s History Month has a theme set by the National Women’s History Alliance. This year, the theme extends that from the previous year—Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.
