Is It Renounce or Denounce?

Posted on Apr 14, 2021

The English language can sometimes be so specific that multiple words have similar meanings and their differences are so little that it’s easy to mess up their usage. Denounce and renounce are good examples. Both words mean to give up or relinquish. Because they look so similar and have similar meanings, they are pretty easy to mix up.

Renounce or Denounce

Denounce and renounce have Latin origins. As previously mentioned, their meanings are also similar, but their difference is in the focus of the action.

Let’s first define renounce. The formal definition of renounce is to relinquish something by a formal announcement. Another meaning of the word is to declare that one will stop engaging with, adhering to, or supporting something. Below are some examples on how the word is used:

  1. The royal had to renounce his title to marry the foreigner.

  2. Following the incident, the principal renounced his support for pro-gun laws.

Similar words include reject or disown. The word renounce is often focused on individual, internal action. Renounce is a personal action, not the action of someone else, which is what we have the next word for.

Denounce has three formal definitions: first, to condemn and publicly acknowledge something as wrong; second, to publicly accuse someone of a crime or inform against someone; and last, to give a formal announcement of the end of a treaty. Below are some examples on how the word is used:

  1. The students held a protest denouncing discrimination in the school’s admission policies.

  2. The criminal was denounced to the police by his own lover.

  3. Hitler denounced the Treaty of Versailles in 1935.

Despite having three meanings, the most popular is the first. Denounce often has to do with formal announcements and does not always define a personal, internal action.

So how to differentiate the two? Remember the words similar to them and who’s doing the action. When you are rejecting something, use renounce. When someone else is denying something of affiliation, denounce is your word.
