It's Not about the Turkey

Posted on Nov 22, 2016

Thanksgiving is coming up, and before we dive into the preparations, let’s learn more about the holiday we’re about to celebrate.

Happy Thanksgiving

Historically, Thanksgiving is celebrated after a bountiful harvest. Back in 1621, colonists from Plymouth, England, shared an autumn harvest with the Wampanoag Indians after the pilgrims’ first corn harvest became successful. Since then, Thanksgiving was celebrated in the colonies. In 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day to be held every November. The traditional Thanksgiving feast includes various dishes, such as mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and a whole roasted turkey.

Today Thanksgiving traditions have adapted to include various foods of different cultures. Turkey is now also cooked in different ways, such as deep fried and baked, or in an odd dish called a “turducken,” which is a chicken stuffed in a duck and then stuffed in a turkey.

There are other Thanksgiving traditions apart from the feast. Thanksgiving prompts many to volunteer. Other than having dinners with their own families, many share their good fortune by holding food drives and hosting free dinners for the less fortunate. Parades have also become popular. The Macy’s department store in New York City has been hosting parades since 1924, featuring marching bands, performers, elaborate floats, and giant balloons. Reenactments of the first Thanksgiving feast are also popular in schools.

In a nutshell, Thanksgiving is a holiday where families come together, share a huge feast, and celebrate all the things they’re thankful for.
