Ling Ma: On Alienation and the Apocalypse

Posted on May 25, 2021

Considering the state that the world is in right now, it may seem counterproductive to read about anything related to a pandemic, fictional or otherwise. However, it takes a unique point of view to take these topics and turn them into satire.

Ling Ma

Born in China, Ling Ma migrated with her family to the United States and grew up in three states: Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Cornell University and her master of fine arts degree from the University of Chicago. She later taught as a professor of English and creative writing in both schools.

Ma is best known for her debut novel, Severance, published in 2018. Severance has gained a resurgence in popularity because of the recent global situation. The novel is set after the fictional Shen Fever ravages nations across the globe, particularly the United States. While this description makes the novel seem like a post-apocalyptic horror, it is also a commentary on capitalism and office culture. Severance started out as a short story, which she later extended into a full novel during her MFA. Despite feeling pressured to craft a “traditional immigration novel,” she instead took the zombie apocalypse trope and wrote about otherness and alienation.

Severance was a critical hit, receiving several accolades such as the Kirkus Prize for Fiction, the NYPL Young Lions Fiction Award, the NPR Best Book of 2018, and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award.

Aside from her novel, she has short stories published in magazines, including Playboy, Granta, and the Chicago Reader.
