Our Journey to 4 Million Words

If you are trying to start a business or trying to find ways of getting a product exposure, then you know that figuring out where to start can be a difficult process. For many entrepreneurs and start-up companies, there oftentimes isn’t a budget for big advertisements and marketing campaigns, so you must be resourceful and use what you have. You have more than you think, trust me! As the marketing manager for 1-Hour Proofreading, I will be documenting our company’s growth along with the strategies that are working and not working.

Marketing Strategy

In this day and age, marketing yourself or your business isn’t an impossible feat. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and other social media platforms are all tools you can use to market yourself and connect with audiences for free. Creating strategic posts and content that will appeal to your target audience is not always easy, but it does give you a chance to gain exposure and connect with your target audience. You may be asking yourself, in a world oversaturated with advertisements and marketing images online, how do you stand out from the crowd without spending a ton of money? The 1HP marketing team had this same question, and we decided that our first move would be to go directly to our target audience, in person.

We asked ourselves, who are the people who would use our services, and what places do they frequent? College students were first on our target list. They have more access to money than high school students, and they are constantly writing academic papers that could benefit from using our services. Plus, we could easily access places that college students visit. As I mentioned before, you have to use your resources when starting from the ground up. Luckily for us, one of our marketing managers was able to reach out to a former teacher and told him about our company and what we were doing. A few emails later, we were invited to do a small presentation discussing our services. This was our opportunity to interact with potential customers and also get the business exposure at little cost.

College Students

Our goal for the presentation was to let students know who we are and what we do and persuade them to take advantage of our services. This was our very first official presentation about 1-Hour Proofreading. The class was small, consisting of about 14 ESL (English as a second language) students. Learning a second language is difficult, especially if the language you are studying is extremely different from your own in terms of grammar and sentence structure. Since English editing is our specialty, ESL students are the perfect clients for our services. Not only can ESL students benefit from seeing the mistakes in their own writing, but they are given the opportunity to hand in quality papers edited by English experts.

When we walked into the classroom, everyone was silent, and all eyes were on us. It was an evening class, and everyone looked just about ready to go. As many of you can attest, public speaking can be extremely nerve racking. Remember what to say and when to say it. Keep an eye contact with the audience, and move around while you talk so your presentation does not look stiff. Make sure you talk with a “smile” in your voice (no one wants to hear a presentation from the Clear Eyes guy). Most importantly, make sure the audience can hear you, but don’t talk so loud that it sounds as if you’re yelling at them.

The presentation went well overall. We took about 15 minutes to present everything, and we took turns speaking. We were successful in introducing our services. When all was said and done, they knew who we are and what we do. Now were they persuaded to use our services? We gave each student two discount cards, one for themselves and another for a friend in hopes this would persuade them to try out our services. If they try the proofreading or copyediting service and like the result, they will be more inclined to use it again.

What did we gain from the presentation? We saw traffic on our website and orders based out of New Jersey (where the college is located). A few students actually used the discount code we gave out! We considered this a win for our marketing team. It was time to explore this method of marketing a little further and see what we could do through in-person presentations.
