Scholastic Celebrates 20 years of Harry Potter

This year marks the 20th publication anniversary of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States. Scholastic marked this celebration by releasing a brand-new set of covers.

Originally published by Scholastic in the United States in 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone tells the story of a bespectacled young boy named Harry Potter, who discovers that he has magical powers on his 11th birthday. It has since become a modern classic in children’s literature.

The new covers feature black-and-white illustrations superimposed with jewel-toned typography. The illustrations feature intricate details including Harry’s stag Patronus, Hermione’s Time Turner, and Hogwarts Express. The real magic is revealed once the covers are placed side by side, showing Harry’s journey from Privet Drive up to the Battle of Hogwarts.

The artist behind the new covers is Brian Selznick, an award-winning author and illustrator, best known for The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007) and Wonderstruck (2011). Selznick considers himself a big fan of Harry Potter and a proud Hufflepuff.

Other than the new covers, more events mark the 20th-year celebrations of Harry Potter in the United States. Jack Thorne’s new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened in Broadway last April 22 and won six Tony awards, including Best New Play. The British Library’s exhibition, Harry Potter: A History of Magic is also set to transfer to the New York Historical Society on October 5. Finally, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the much-anticipated sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is set for release this November.

The new Harry Potter books featuring Selznick’s cover art were released in the United States last June 26.
