The Thin Line Between Justice and Vengeance: A Game of Thrones Season 7 Review

Posted on Jul 31, 2017

“The Queen’s Justice” opens with the highly anticipated meeting between the last remaining Targaryens—the Dragon Queen and the King in the North, the former well aware of the blood in her veins and the latter clueless to his own royal lineage. To the disappointment of a legion of fans, though, this meeting does not come with sparks or romantic tones; instead, the two leaders spend their time arguing over loyalties and priorities, family histories, and battles fought and won.

Jon Snow and Davos

When Ice and Fire Collide

“It doesn’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne,” Davos tells the Dragon Queen as he tries to persuade her into an alliance, not for war with the Lannisters but with a far more sinister enemy. He draws parallels with Jon Snow’s story to the Khaleesi’s own tale of triumph. Despite his bastard status, Jon Snow rose up the ranks and became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and later King in the North because the people believed in him, as all real leaders should be.

Jon and Daenerys both espouse an ideology that assures the safety of their people, sparing as many lives as they can for the common good.

Claws of Revenge

Tyrene and Ellaria Sand The Queen's Justice

Jon and Daenerys’s ideology is something that directly contradicts the Lion Queen’s idea of justice—to roar out her revenge, no matter how much collateral damage there may be.

Euron Greyjoy brings her gifts—his own niece, Yara Greyjoy, the Dornish ruler Ellaria Sand, and the Sand Snake Tyene. They are brought to the dungeon, where Cersei dishes out her revenge for Myrcella’s death.

She chains mother and daughter on opposite sides of the cell. Then she bestows upon Tyene the same poisonous kiss of death that Ellaria used so that Ellaria would be watching as Tyene dies, both struggling to get to the other.

Drunk on her victory over the Dornish, she then goes to Jaime’s room, surprising him with the urgency she displays.

The next morning, she ignores whatever repercussion she might face when a serving lady catches Jaime naked on the bed, the implications obvious. She is truly embodying what she told her twin years ago, that she does not care about anyone but them, for the others are merely ants, unworthy of their attention.

The Queen of Thorns and Her Legacy

Cersei

Cersei’s revenge does not end with the Lords of Sunspear.

Grey Worm and his Unsullied army seize the Lannister stronghold, Casterly Rock, but Grey Worm becomes unnerved with how easy it has been. There is no resistance, no battles, no nothing—Casterly Rock has been abandoned, for Jaime Lannister takes his forces to Highgarden.

They succeed, soundly defeating the Tyrell army.

Then the Kingslayer offers Lady Olenna a peaceful death instead of the methods Cersei prefers.

But the House Tyrell matriarch shall not give him peace. She drinks the poisoned wine without fuss, and then she makes a move that shows just how she came to be known as the Queen of Thorns.

“I’d hate to die like your son,” she tells him, calm as can be. “Clawing at my neck, foam and bile spilling from my mouth, eyes blood red, skin purple. Must have been horrible for you, as a Kingsguard, as a father. It was horrible enough for me. A shocking scene. Not at all what I intended. You see, I had never seen the poison work before.”

She bids the stricken Jaime. “Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.”

In the end, Jaime storms out of the room, leaving the last of the roses behind.

The Rightful Heir to Winterfell

Bran Stark finally arrived in Winterfell

Up north, Brandon Stark returns to Winterfell, bringing his sister Sansa to tears.

“You’re Father’s last living trueborn son. You’re lord of Winterfell now,” she tells him.

“I can never be lord of Winterfell,” he replies, deadpan. “I can never be lord of anything. I’m the Three-Eyed Raven.”

Then he reveals just what it means, to see everything that was and is and will ever be. He describes the night Sansa was raped by Ramsay Bolton, leading his sister to recall memories better left alone.

—— ——

What will Brandon’s presence back in Winterfell mean? When will he reveal Jon Snow’s true parentage? What is Littlefinger planning in the home of the wolves?
