Dystopia may be an overdone genre, but no one does it quite like Divergent’s Veronica Roth.
A native of Illinois, Roth grew up loving books. One of her favorites was the Lois Lowry classic, The Giver, which, incidentally, has been called the original dystopian young adult novel.
Roth studied Creative Writing in Northwestern University. She worked as a journalist, then became a popular author because of the Divergent trilogy. She wrote the manuscript for the first book in the series back when she was in her senior year in college. In 2011, it was finally published by HarperCollins.
Divergent is a postapocalyptic dystopian novel for young adults. It tells a future wherein society is divided into five factions: Dauntless for bravery, Abnegation for selflessness, Erudite for intellectuality, Amity for peacefulness, and Candor for honesty. At the age of sixteen, citizens undergo a test that will help choose a faction that fits their personality and skills. After the exam, each sixteen-year-old makes their decision publicly in a ceremony in front of the whole society.
The story centers on a girl named Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who was born in Abnegation. After undergoing the test, she finds out that she is an anomaly called a Divergent, someone who belongs to more than one faction. When the day comes, she chooses Dauntless. In the faction, she meets Tobias “Four” Eaton, who helps Tris explore her new faction and new identity.
Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent, was published in 2012. This was followed by the final book in the series, Allegiant, the following year. By 2015, the trilogy had sold over thirty million copies. Roth also published an accompaniment novel, Four, which tells the trilogy from the perspective of the eponymous character. The trilogy is being adapted into a series of four movies, starring Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four. The final movie, Ascendant, is set to premiere later this year. Rumors also say that a TV miniseries adaptation of the trilogy might happen.
Currently, Roth is working on her first novel outside of Divergent, a two-part science fiction series called Carve the Mark. However, it was also announced late last year that she was creating an epilogue to Divergent titled We Can Be Mended.
