Celeste Ng: On Family and Fortitude

The American dream is often described to include a house in the suburbs, surrounded by a white picket fence. While this may sound ideal, a lot happens beyond the perfect white picket fence. Celeste Ng explores these in her stories.

Celeste Ng

Born to immigrant parents hailing originally from Hong Kong, Celeste Ng is a writer known for her multi-awarded debut novel, Everything I Never Told You. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then her family moved to Ohio when she was ten. This was when she started becoming involved with publications, becoming coeditor of her high school’s literary magazine. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in English at Harvard University and then continued on to a master of fine arts degree in writing from the University of Michigan.

Her debut novel was published in 2014. Everything I Never Told You is a literary thriller set in 1970s Ohio. The novel follows the disappearance of Lydia and her family’s attempt to find out the truth about where she is, which ends up uncovering cracks within the family’s relationships. The novel won the Amazon Book of the Year Award in 2014 and then the Massachusetts Book Award in 2015.

In 2017, she published her second book, Little Fires Everywhere. The novel is set in a suburb and focuses on the mystery revolving the new family in town and a difficult adoption case. Much like her debut novel, Little Fires Everywhere explores the complications of family dynamics, race relations, and suburbia. The novel was adapted into a miniseries on the streaming platform Hulu.

Back in her high school days, Ng was also part of a school organization on race relations. The organization would visit elementary schools within the area and talk about things like discrimination and stereotyping. Ng would bring this advocacy in her adulthood through the launch of a grant program with We Need Diverse Books.
